I currently owned a 2014 Honda CRV, do mostly highway driving, and have 201,000+ miles on it. If the dash gauge is correct, I get about 26.5mpg.
I have been looking for a new mid-sized SUV (AWD or switchable to 4WD a must), and in particular the RAV4 and its hybrid counterpart, which I see advertised as having a fuel economy of 36-39 mpg.

I would like to know what owners are experiencing, in reality? The RAV4’s are supposed to be quite reliable and rugged, hence, why I am veering toward them. I am often trekking up to the mountains to hike, so I am usually going uphill. Thanks!

I’ll start by saying that I’m not a normal driver. I’m a bit of a hyper miler. I have a 23 Rav4 Le AWD. I mostly drive the speed limit, I draft a similar speed vehicles on the interstate, I always stay in eco mode, and I always use the feature where the Rav shuts off at a stop. I average 33 mpg for each tank full. I have averaged 38 mpg from Helen Ga to my home in Dublin Ga. My trip to work from Dublin to Vidalia typically is 38-40 mpg for the 45 mile trip.

While I only have maybe about 1,500 miles, I have the ’23 XLE AWD and I do drive around with a couple of tool bags in the back at all times. I’m also driving around the Metro Atlanta area, 90% very stop & go. My first tank average was around 24.5, now I’m up to 27.4. Honestly I’m happy with that, consider I came from a 2020 Soul 2.0L and was averaging 27-29mpg. Considering the weight change of the vehicle AND it has AWD, seeing the MPG creep up is good and I’ve been driving in the worst possible conditions since I’ve gotten to car so I’d say it’s doing pretty well.

Was averaging 30 MPGs before switching jobs. 50/50 mix of highway/city. After switching I’m getting 26 MPGs. Same distance, same 50/50 mix but much more traffic/stop and go on the highway.

2023 TRD Offroad AWD. I’m not light on the gas pedal and drive in Normal Mode or Sport Mode. If I’m driving open roads, I can easily average 32+ MPGs. The stop and go kills mileage. A hybrid would be better suited for stop and go.

Edit: I’ve tracked every tank since the initial dealer fill. Hand calculated comparing to the onboard is very accurate. I also track tire pressures as well.

I’m getting consistent 27 MPG in my ’21 ICE model XLE with larger size 245/65-17 Falken WildPeak A/T Trail tires. 10K miles. Mostly rural 2 lanes with lots of hills and some highways at 70MPH+. Normal mode usually—Sport for passing—ECO only in town or when stuck behind slow pokes.

Currently on a road trip in a 2023 XLE hybrid. Have gotten 31 MPG driving an actual 90 MPH into a headwind, 33 MPG driving an actual 83 MPH into a crosswind, and typically right around 40 MPG when driving an actual 65 MPH. The speedometer displays about 3.5% high.

If you drive in very hilly terrain, look at this thread for some of my other experiences:

Behavior of hybrid system in hilly terrain

While on our first road trip in our 2023 XLE hybrid with the NiMH battery, we’ve encountered several instances of the limitations of the hybrid system in recovering energy in mountainous terrain. Our experience wasn’t something I read about in scouring this forum, and while it would have been a.

On my ’21 XLE hybrid, I typically get about 45 MPH in the summer if I take it easy. In the winter, it drops to about 38 MPG. I have done that consistently for two years now. Very happy with the hybrid.

2022 XLE Hybrid. Summer 46-50mpg. WInter 39-43mpg. I am a conservative driver, slow and steady acceleration and such as able depending on other traffic. State roads, back roads, little traffic. Live on the edge of the Adirondacks and go into them regularly, where mileage stays high- this is a lot of up and down, not the kind of 20 mile sustained uphills you get in places like Colorado Rockies.

I would look into the Rav4’s AWD and its suitability for what you plan to do. It is NOT a regular off-road vehicle, but it is a very good fire road and such vehicle. Snow will depend on tires more than limits of the Rav4 AWD.

Where you drive and how you drive will make a huge difference in actual mileage for a hybrid. A road trip using interstates recently dropped mpg to 44. Being on side roads brought it back up. Interstate driving is probably the RAV4 Hybrid’s weakest mileage, but will still beat an ICE. A hybrid is best at lower speeds and more variation in both speed and terrain.

There are rumors of a hybrid 4Runner coming out.

In addition to the fuel economy I reported in post #6, today we zipped along at 100 MPH for about 15 minutes and averaged about 23 MPG according to where the instantaneous fuel economy gauge was averaging during that time. I snapped a picture as I first accelerated up to that speed but my wife wouldn’t let me shoot any more pictures afterwards.

We’ve got a ’23 Limited hybrid that we brought home 6 weeks ago tomorrow. It now has 2,270 miles on it. As others have stated, the hybrids definitely get better fuel economy in city driving. If I recall correctly, on our first fill, the trip meter showed we had averaged 40.7 mpg & it actually calculated out to 41.3 mpg. The next fill was during a 1,200 mile road trip with speeds from 60 mph to near 75 mph & on that trip we got just under 39 mpg. Since then we’ve seen mileage as good as 45-51 mpg during a sight seeing ride around Madison, Wisconsin with our grand daughter, and as low as 34 mpg with the cruise set @ 77 mph on I-80 driving into a 20 mph headwind. We had gotten 36.4 mpg on the same drive @ the same speed, on the same stretch of road with a 20 mph tailwind earlier in the day. Yesterday we took a two hour pleasure ride where we drove through a local State Park, and then drove between 55-60 mph on two lane highways. When we pulled into the garage our trip meter showed just over 45 mpg. According to GPS our speedometer displays 1.5% higher than actual speed.

There are reports that you can’t completely fill the gas tank on RAV4s, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with ours. On our trip to Wisconsin we drove until the screen info said we had 21 miles to empty. When we filled, I put in 12.9 gallons. That was filling with the nozzle on the lowest setting and then adding up the nearest $ after it clicked off.

Some have complained about ride quality, seat discomfort, and a noisy ICE. My wife & I haven’t sensed any of that in our Limited model. The ride, comfort, handling, & noise level, is every bit as good or better than our ’21 Passport Elite. We probably average around 24-25 mpg with the Honda, so you can guess what has taken over as our road trip vehicle.

Carsguide Senior Journalist Richard Berry had this to say at the time: The best hybrid among these three SUVs is without a doubt the Outlander. The powertrain technology is so good, using as little petrol as possible, so anybody can achieve outstanding fuel consumption through everyday driving.
