Yes, it carries the Honda name, but does the 2018 Civic live up to the brand’s reliable reputation? It does, and despite four mostly minor recalls and a few problems to watch out for, like a faulty fuel pump, it’s definitely one of the best models in its class.

Klíčové body
- The 2018 Honda Civic has four recalls and 155 registered complaints by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, with only one about a faulty fuel pump being somewhat serious.
- The most widespread recall for the 2018 Civic relates to a faulty low-pressure fuel pump in the gas tank, which may cause engine stalling on almost 136,000 vehicles, not just the Civic.
- AC failure is by far the most common complaint by owners. Although no recall was sent out, Honda issued a 10-year/unlimited mile extended warranty on AC condensers for this model.
- Many report the 1.5-liter, turbocharged “Earth Dreams” engine suffers from significant fuel dilution issues that can lead to gasoline fumes seeping into the cabin.
- Several owners note premature steering rack failing, with symptoms like jerking and clicking, or the steering system feeling stiff. We think despite its flaws, the 2018 Civic is a very solid compact sedan.

2018 Honda Civic Has Just Four Recalls, and While Most are Pretty Insignificant and Uncommon, the Fuel Pump Issue is More Widespread
Four recalls have been issued for the 2018 Civic, most of which are fairly minor, like a certification label with incorrect information on it. Another involves a magnet that controls the torque sensor, which may become dislodged while driving and cause reduced steering capability. Yet, both are exceedingly rare, affecting less than 60 units each.
The other two recalls are more widespread, with one not necessarily being a priority, but affecting over 7,000 units: incorrect information in the owner’s manual.
Issued for 135,995 Honda/Acura models of multiple years (not just the 2018 Civic), a faulty fuel pump. If the pump fails while driving, the engine will stall as it won’t receive any fuel. Whether you’re cruising at highway speeds, pulling into traffic, crossing an intersection, or any number of instances, the chances of an accident occurring increase.
As with all recalls, the vehicle manufacturer must perform all necessary repairs free of charge.
Some 2018 Civics May Have a Faulty AC System that Led to Class-action Lawsuit, with Honda Extending the Warranty on Affected Vehicles
Premature AC failure impacts all 2018 Honda Civics, regardless of engine or trim configuration. According to dozens of complaints filed with the NHTSA, the Civic’s AC starts blowing hot air instead of cold, sometimes with less than 30,000 miles on the odometer.
The issue was narrowed down to a leaky condenser unit and is so widespread that it led to a class-action lawsuit in 2019. Though no recall was issued, Honda extended certain warranties on affected models to cover the faulty AC condenser for up to ten years with no limits on mileage.
However, another report by Vehicle History notes the warranty does not include salvaged or totaled vehicles, or those with a condenser leak caused by a foreign object.

1.5T ‘Earth Dreams’ Engine Has Problems with Fuel Dilution, an Issue that Can Cause the Cabin to Smell of Gasoline
Fuel dilution is by no means a problem unique to Honda’s 1.5T engine. In fact, dilution isn’t always a problem in and of itself. A 2015 Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) study notes that all turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engines experience at least some fuel dilution. This is because direct-injection systems may cause fuel to accumulate on cylinder walls and leak into the crankcase, mixing with the engine oil.
Usually, engines run hot enough to burn off the fuel that slips through. But Honda’s 1.5T is known to run cold, so the engine heat isn’t enough to “vaporize” the excess fuel.
Other symptoms of severe fuel dilution in the 2018 Civic include odors of gasoline penetrating the cabin, as noted by multiple NHTSA complaints. Honda eventually extended the powertrain warranty for over 1,000,000 1.5T-equipped vehicles. According to Problémy s Hondou, the warranty covers camshafts, rocker-arm assemblies, and spark plugs for six years/unlimited miles.
Multiple NHTSA Complaints on Some 2018 Civics Indicate Premature Power Steering Rack Failure, Likely a $3,500 Fix if Outside the Warranty
Of the 143 2018 Civic NHTSA complaints, just over 20 fall under “steering components.” Many note “clicking and jerking” in the steering wheel, while others describe the steering system stiffening, or even “getting stuck” while driving at speed. Several of the complaints report taking their vehicles to a Honda dealer to hear a faulty power steering rack failure was the culprit. If outside its warranty, repairs can run as high as $3,500.
Notably, this 2018 Civic problem tends to occur at an average odometer reading of around 14,500 miles, which is far below the average life expectancy of a power steering rack. Still, no recalls or service bulletins have been issued to address this problem.

Rodents May Be Attracted to Soy-based Internal Wiring in 2018 Civics, a Tasty Snack that Can Cause All Sorts of Issues
In recent years, automakers have started using biodegradable, soy-based wiring. While this promises to be an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based insulation, a side effect is that rodents like to munch on it, leading to various electrical problems. Three NHTSA complaints about the 2018 Honda Civic state that rodents “chewed” through wiring, causing rough idle and acceleration loss.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Honda and other automakers argue that all wiring—regardless of its material—can attract rodents and that there’s “no evidence” to suggest that soy-based wires are especially favored by critters. Nonetheless, Honda now offers “rodent tape” laced with spices that repel rodents, though the company still refuses to repair already-damaged wiring, even if under warranty.
Four Minor Recalls and Limited Coinciding Complaints Make the 2018 Honda Civic a Reliable Choice in the Compact Sedan Compact
The 2018 Civics’ most serious problems—fuel dilution in the 1.5T engine and AC failure—have been remedied by Honda through extended warranty programs, which should give prospective buyers some peace of mind. However, when it comes to choosing the powertrain, consider the naturally-aspirated alternative over the troubled 1.5T engine.

What Years are Bad for Honda Civics?
Honda Civics are mostly reliable, but 2001-2005 models are bad years, garnering over 1,100 registered NHTSA complaints and 27 recalls, with 2001 being the worst. Civics from 2006 and 2007 also had similar issues as previous years, but added a possible accelerator problem where the gas pedal could become stuck, and paint that can peel off.
What Year Honda Civic is Best?
While earlier years built the models reputation for reliability, the 10th-gen. Civics are surely some of the best ever. For those not wanting to pay new-car prices, overall the 2017 Honda Civic EX is our favorite, which now costs about $20,000 on the used market. This also happens to be the year the Civic Type-R was reintroduced.
Is a Honda Civic Worth Buying?
The Honda Civic is seen by many as one of the best used cars worth buying. It’s almost always been reliable and has few recalls or registered complaints over the last decade. Plus, it gets great gas mileage and scores well in terms of safety. More recent models, like the 2018 Civic, are some of the best ever built.

Best bang for $24k
Having spent $24k on the Touring model of this car, brand new, and reaching nearly 50k miles, I can’t think of a single issue that would indicate a person could’ve purchased a more reliable and consistent vehicle. I’ve had no A/C issues (sorry folks) or any issues outside of having d***y fuel injectors (that I later traced back to using poor quality gasoline). Thankfully, having Honda Care, Honda replaced them all under warranty. This car still looks great, four years later, and has been a dream come true during the recent increases in gas prices. My leather seats still look brand new, all of my electrical components still work (including the rear-heated seats and infotainment), and ride comfort during long trips is as great as my ride stability driving through the city — perfect. I drove my ’06 Civic to 207,000 miles with very few issues and the way things are going, this car shows no signs of being incapable of doing the same.

2018 Honda Civic LX Sedan A/C failed at 30k miles
My A/C failed 3 times in extremely hot weather in Los Angeles during the summer months. Just a few years old, Honda made me pay out of pocket to replace the compressor with only 40-50k miles! Shortly after replacing the compressor, my a/c stopped blowing cold air again after 1 year. Then they finally replaced the a/c condenser. I tried to reach out to Honda corporate to reimburse me for the out of pocket expense for the a/c compressor and they refused to help me. After the A/C failed on the 3rd time, I found a lawyer to sue Honda. The case is still pending. This was my first Honda purchase(my whole family buys Toyotas). I will never purchase a Honda ever again.

Accelerator sticks 2018
Last month on my way back to NC from a drive to California, I was in the mountains of NC and I took my foot of the gas, the cruise control was off and the engine was very loud and sounded like if you put it in neutral and rev it up. Well, last night on my way back to NC from Nevada and I was exiting I-40 and the same thing happened as I hit close to a stop sign. I was pushing the breaks but the car didn’t stop. I went right through an intersection and up the ramp to get back on the highway. After tapping the gas petal several times it finally stopped. I could have been killed. I was terrified.

Its not perfect , but bo car is
Have a 2018 sport civic hb. Fuel economy is great. Plenty of power, shifts good . Radio system is c**p, poor usb port placements. Weatherproofing adound door windows is cheap.and peels off, rear window wiper takes forever to get fluid. I have tye 18 inch tires and the rims are always getting piled up withroad muck which puts em outa balance and therefore makes the vehicle vibrate. I love the car but it does have a few flaws mostly poor design issues

Backup camera could have been more useful
The air conditioner could be better. If you have an external force that puts a pinhole in the air filter then the warranty does not cover the cost to fix the air filtration unit. Also, the back camera is not the best given the year and model of the car. There are no lines and guides with the back camera.

Amazing car, horrible Bluetooth system.
The only problem I have had with my car is the Bluetooth feature, it is constantly not connecting with my phone, either the phone part will connect or just the Bluetooth. People are not able to hear me when using the hands free feature. It also is hard for me to hear people talking.

Honda civic is not what we had hoped it would be.
We have had issues with this car since day one. The tire low pressure light is always on and as soon as it is reset comes back on again. The battery has had to be replaced more than our other cars. The cabin is noisier than expected. Handling is not as smooth as expected.

Honda civic: just a few issues.
My tire pressure light goes off randomly all the time. At first, I truly thought it was low, but I got it checked, and it wasn’t. That is one thing to watch out for. You might also have the problem with the signal lights, which sometimes do not work either.

I have a 2018 Honda Civic EX that I bought brand new and had no issues with it. It has 167,000 miles on it and still runs like new. It has been one of the best cars that I ever bought. I have had lots of cars. It is a fun car to drive. I really appreciate it.
Rick D on November 9, 2021
Would not purchase another.
1. Bumper paint and vehicle paint match is poor. 2. Interior carpet is poor quality. 3. Interior features are poor and lacking such as eyeglass holder, poorly designed cabin temperature location, radio control selection is poor, driver seat uncomfortable.

Too low to the ground and unstable in wet conditions
Just moved to Colorado and the civic does not have enough ground clearance. It limits access to most trails and does not do well when it snows a lot. My heat shield has come off twice so far. Plus it is not all wheel drive so I tend to hydroplane a lot!

2018 with lane assist issues
What I do not particularly care for is the lane assist. At times, it tries to correct my driving when I am already in the appropriate place on the road. Happens a lot on newly painted roads that still have old lines showing. System gets confused.

Main downside is the poor ride
Not a smooth ride. Not a comfortable ride, not spacious, not luxurious, technologically challenged. I wish I had more storage in the vehicle and more room for my passengers. I do not like that I can feel every bump in the road when driving.

Stalling issue with my 2018 Civic
What I dislike about my car is that when I am in eco mode and I have to stop quickly then go quickly (usually happens in busy intersections) my car stalls for a few seconds, I have to take my foot off the gas then press down on it again.

AC had to be replaced
The air conditioner broke after 6 months of use. They replaced the compressor free of charge. I love the car otherwise, however Honda mentioned an air conditioner problem with the new Civics.

Problems with my electronics
There are some problems I have had with it, such as the backup camera glitching some and also the screen for the backup camera turning black a lot. It currently does not work anymore.

Would not recommend purchase.
Fuel injector and line had to be replaced within 2 weeks of purchase. Gas smell in cabin. Exhaust smells as if it is from a old semi-truck. Brake not holding. Console issues.

Infotainment System Unreliable
After reaching 9700 miles on my 2018 Civic EX, the screen on the infotainment system shows nothing but vertical lines. Shutting it down and restarting doesn’t work.

The most important thing people should know about this car is that the battery isn’t the best.
Sometimes the battery can shut off. This can occur while I’m actually driving the vehicle and it gives me lots of issues.

The 2018 Honda Civic is a part of the tenth generation of the sedan and makes its place in the market with its frugality and refined driving dynamics. It comes with a comprehensive set of safety features and promises to be a dependable option. The Japanese sedan has 171 complaints and 4 recalls, however, its sales volume justifies its performance.

The 2018 Civic price starts at $19,835 and competes with the likes of the Toyota Corolla, the Mazda 3, and the Chevrolet Cruze. It has also improved over the years in terms of its reliability ratings and now gets an overall reliability rating of 80/100 by J.D. Power. Although competitors still get better ratings, it brings the the Civic on par with the rivals.
2018 Honda Civic User Complaints and Problems
While the Honda 2018 Civic has had its fair share of user complaints registered, the Civic is a high sales volume car and when considering the numbers, the number of complaints is minuscule. Also, the issues weren’t too major for them to cause accidents in particular and Honda was prompt enough to fix them quickly.

Mechanical Complaints
- Chewed engine wiring: In the 2018 Honda Civic, the wires that run through the engine compartment have been treated with a soy base. However, the use of such materials attracts rodents that chew on these wires, ultimately resulting in engine failures and, in one case, the loss of power steering assistance.
- Issues with the steering system: The 2018 Honda Civic’s steering problems are concerned with the system swerving to the left, without the driver’s input. As a result, the vehicle can independently shift lanes and requires constant correction from the driver. Additionally, some complainants have also reported the power steering assistance to fail, which makes it difficult to maneuver.
- Dilution of oil in fuel line: In several cases in the current year and previous model years as well, buyers have reported a strong odor entering the cabin through the aircon vents. Upon inspection, it was found that the engine oil mixed and diluted into the fuel line, increasing the risk of an engine stall.
Electric System Complaints:
- Failure of airconditioning unit: In several cases, buyers of the Honda Civic have reported the air conditioning unit stopped functioning. This is because of the failure of the AC compressor and condenser. While the problem is widespread, there is no recall currently initiated by the brand and the only solution is the replacement of affected components.
- Infotainment screen malfunction: The Honda Civic’s electrical problems also take into account the failure of the infotainment system. Buyers have reported the erratic functioning of the touchscreen unit. This includes a delayed response to touch inputs, unexpected loss of power, and turning black when the camera is in operation. While there is no determined cause for the problem, it results in the loss of access to basic infotainment functionalities.
Safety Complaints
- Non-deployment of airbags: Among the 2018 Civic issues, buyers of the Japanese sedan have reported the non-deployment of airbags in case of a crash. As a result, complainants have reported injuries to the driver and occupants, and in one case, medical assistance was sought after the crash.
Structural Complaints
- Structural deficiencies: The Honda Civic’s quality issues are concerned with the substandard build of its windshield and sunroof, which shatter without impact or incidence. Additionally, buyers of the sedan have also reported the chipping of the paint, especially from its hood and rear doors.
2018 Honda Civic připomíná
The vehicles that have a particular issue plaguing the entire model lineup are recalled by the manufacturer as per the guidelines of the NHTSA to get them fixed for the owners. While this may not cost you money, it does create a sense of uncertainty of an impending mishap waiting to happen. Luckily, the 2018 Civic has been recalled only 4 times to date, out of which a couple of them were only regarding the owner’s manual and certification labels.

Should you buy the 2018 Honda Civic?
The 2018 Honda Civic complaints might be a carryover from yesteryear models, yet their impact has reduced significantly. As a result, the Japanese sedan has amassed widescale popularity for its reliability and proves to be an unquestioned choice. However, CarHP recommends buyers conduct their due diligence about the air conditioning unit and the steering system, before finalizing a buying decision.
