As some of you know, i’ve had some issues with my car and there are still a few to resolve.
The one annoying problem that is getting to me though is the stuttering the car does when getting the car up to speed.
Lets say i’m joining the motorway and i put my foot down.
The car starts out ok but then when it gets to a certain amount of revs (dependent on gear) the car will stutter and is remedied very slightly by easing off the accelerator pedal a touch.
I’ve read loads of conflicting possibilities as to the cause and i’m incline to go with the fuel pressure regulator.
I do have issues with the stems of my coil packs and one of the HT lead ends that have cracks in them so i’m already looking to get those replaced.
And then there is the compounding issue of the rear O2 sensor possibly being at fault even though the car isn’t throwing up any lambda warnings on the dash.
But that being said, i have started to look at the FPR because when i try to start the car up from cold it will usually take 4 or 5 cranks of the engine before it starts to show any sign of firing and then on the 6th or 7th crank it will fire up.
Once started the revs will climb and then drop, like its going to stall, and then creep back up.
It does this for a few seconds and then runs normally.
The stuttering also happens when i’m in third gear going around a bend at low speed/revs even though this gear is sufficient for those bends.
It rarely happens in any other gear unless i’m putting my foot down and reach a certain speed/revs.
I’d like to get some of your thoughts on this and what the costs for an FPR is.
I’d also like to ask if the stuttering could be caused by the top intercooler hose collapsing under load.
When i rev the engine from under the bonnet, the hose collapses as the engine hits the higher rev range for the turbo to kick in.
I have contemplated replacing it with a rigid pipe but i want to try to keep as much of the car as original as possible until i’ve got the main issues sorted and the car is running as it should.
The turbo was replaced about 6 weeks ago and the fuel pump was replaced for an uprated one at the same time.
I do have to do something about the fuel filter that came with the pump as it does not fit inside the swirl pot for the sender unit so i have left it off.
This may have caused a secondary issue as when the tank level is just below the quarter line the car will act as though it is being starved of fuel when going around corners or sharp’ish bends.
Now some of you may hazard a guess that the reason is because of no filter on the end of the pump but it did this before the old turbo packed up and the pump was replaced.
any advice is much appreciated.
Another thing i wanted to ask was about the steering.
The steering is quite vague when it comes to correcting the cars straight line steering and was like this when i bought it.
The MOT advisory notes for the car states,
001 Nearside Steering system has slight free play detected at steering wheel [2.2.A.1b]
I’ve replaced the front anti-roll linkages and the track rod ends and then had the wheels tracked accordingly.
There has been virtually no change to this vagueness and i’m lost as to where i should look next.

funny you’ve brought this up as mine started doing this last week just after I replaced the fuel pump. The first time was entering the A41 rock ferry bypass, 40mph in 4th put foot down a bit and it hesitated. This used to happen when my coil pack ends had splits in them but I’ve replaced these and the drop in power is a different sensation now. 2nd time was entering the m53 slip rd, foot down hard in all gears, just before I dipped the clutch for 5th the power dropped. Then today in 2nd driving slow. Your fpr defo needs replacing but as I’m aware it doesn’t affect power when engine is running. I’ve got gen volvo spark plugs about 10k old. Engine rebuilt 36k ago. No codes. On the fuel pump filter what i did was cut the plastic channel thing in half so it would fit in the swirl pot. I left the filter on it i just cut through the top side of the fibre filter. One thing about the pump though, as its slightly different it doesn’t sit precisely vertical in the swirl pot, I’m wondering if this has something to do with it?

I was considering butchering the plastic inner tubing for the filter in order to get it in.
I’m pretty sure that it is supposed to hold the pressure in the fuel line according to a thread i had read and 960 advised that something along that line was best.
The spark plugs in my motor have been replaced for genuine Volvo ones and it has only been about a fortnight since i serviced the car.
The only other thing i can think of doing is to clean my injectors but i’m unsure of how best to do this without causing damage.
Like you, my car also has no codes which gives any indication of what the issues may be so that leaves me with the O2 sensors and the hoses for the intercooler.
:lightbulb: Unless there is an issue with my MAF that only manifests itself when under load.
But could this happen without throwing up a code?

no idea mate but one thing I do know is 960kg know’s a **** load more than I do about motors. If the 02 sensors are faulty would this not show up? Reason I ask is my exhaust is full of what looks like black soot. Could be over fueling.

A new set of genuine Volvo plugs cured my s-s-s-stutter immediately.
Aleluja!
I can’t see in your post if you’ve changed yours, so that’s where I’d start.

I’ve got pretty much the same issue, only happens intermittently and no codes thrown up.
Happens at high speed, overtaking on country roads etc.
I have replaced the fuel pump, put in volvo plugs, new leads and known good coils. Still happens randomly.
Out of curiousity, what temperature is it/was it when it happened? Mine seems to go a lot better in cold weather, but in 35 degrees and up the car can cut out totally.

Mine used to do it as well and i am pretty sure it’s either tha cat or the lambda sensor making it happen. i replaced fuel pump, leads, plugs and coil packs but not driven properly sice to try it.

The plugs were changed for genuine Volvo plugs around a month after having the car.

Temperatures can be anywhere when this happens but it does happen more frequently, depending on speed and so on, when it is much warmer.

I was going to replace the Lambda’s anyway so after the other things i have to replace i will move onto those next.
It is kind of hard to isolate as it could be related to many things.
I’d be happy to get the car to start after a single turn of the key to be honest and work on the rest as i go.

I had a very similar issue with idling but was at LOW revs and going up hills. Had it plugged in and there were no recorded faults, after spending too much money trying to resolve the prob I resorted to buying new MAF sensor, not a genuine one from Volvo though as they’re soooo expensive, got one off eBay for 35 delivered, fitted it and it has seemed to resolved the problem. Been 10 days now without a stutter

AS per my first post, could anyone advise of what else could need looking at as to why the steering feels a bit woolly when driving?
Also, i don’t know if anyone has experienced this but when i start driving the car from cold, i get this annoying rattle which seems to come from the direction of the drivers foot well and seat.
It will happen when accelerating and also when taking my foot off the accelerator peddle.
It’s been going for as long as i can remember and i’m beginning to think it could be something to do with the drive shaft.
I’ve tried to capture it using the recording function of my phone but it seems to pick up more of the rolling and engine noise than the rattle i’m talking about.
I will keep trying but i wanted to get some views of what it possibly could be.

Could be the wheel bearing.

Prior to me taking the wheels off to change the track rod ends and the anti roll linkages, I checked the bearings for play and they were fine.
I even checked them again to be sure a couple of weeks ago when I did my winter service.
Stumped on what else it could be unless there is some kind of bushing between the steering wheel and steering rack.
