Where is the airbag module on a Ford?

They look the same and the connector is the same. anyone have experience interchanging these?

Who needs a working airbag anyway right?

its a 90’s Ford, Ford did not really catalog parts at that time, they had a list of parts they used and you are often supposed to match up the old one to get the new one. its ok with alternators, bad for belts.

so you need the Ford number from the Mazda unit to get the correct one.

Mazda actually has plenty of these things, and its about $300.

Here is one on Car-Part.com that came out of a 1991 Ford Crown Vic.

It should be a match, but you need to open it up and make sure it matches your PCB design, and also it will most likely need to have it capacitors replaced.

those Ford numbers are the engineering number, which is helpful, but not the part number.

Ford has a lot of spare time on their hands, so each part gets an engineering number, think of it like the part number for the assembly side of the operation. then once the car is built it goes to the parts side, and it gets a part number.

Ford part numbers are 4 digits, with the 4th number being a Z. the second set of numbers is the group number, this tells you what the part is. 8005 is a radiator, 9H307 is a fuel pump, etc. then they get one letter to tell you what car its for.

so a 9L3Z-8005-B is a radiator for a 2009 F150, for example.

then, some parts get a 3rd Motorcraft number.

so any given Ford part can have 3 part numbers, and then some of them can have the 4th Mazda number.

sometimes Mazda gives us a Ford part number, but in the case of this airbag module, they don’t.

crossing a Ford engineering number to a Ford part number is sometimes easy, sometimes not

if you post the Ford part number, i can post all the numbers in that Ford number chain.

I am going to buy a 25$ box. code is F5AF (readily available on ebay, all the other part numbers are not cheap)

F5AF . from my research, just as an FYI. does NOT have a backup battery, so from what I am reading, if you use this box on a 90-93, it is important to unplug the second smaller blue box as F5AF has the «Second» box build in already.

Why not purchase the proper module from the ones I listed on Car-Parts for ~$20 plus shipping?
Also one of the sellers lists they have two for $20 each.
If you purchase both you might get free shipping and two modules for ~$40.

I had to replace mine last year. Nobody had new ones and I looked really hard. Found a new one on eBay with a manufacture date in 2010.

A little late to this thread, but to answer that question, I do: Another airbag module success story

That was in 2015. The first module I put in is still working fine. My «backup» was used successfully by a guy in Virginia to pass inspection, and is just waiting on my shelf, now.

From everything I understand, the 93 airbag system is identical to my 91.

Todd, I read your post before I posted this thread. I used it as inspiration to risk it with cheap boxes and get my airbag working hopefully. Thanks. If you have a spare box that checks out, let me know. I still have not tested the ebay box I got.

The link should lead you to airbag modules that will fit our 1990-1993 Miata’s, but I still suggest you get the place to send you pictures of the module.

If you scroll down about 35 rows you should see the green module I attached the picture of from Tim’s Auto Parts in my first posting. I am not saying to purchase this one, since all of the ones I have purchased have been light blue, but it does look about the right size and has the correct part number.

All of this being said, I still would like to know what error message you module is giving. ie how many blinks before it pauses and cycles through the blink pattern again?

There is a good chance that any module you by will have either the 6 blink or 10 blink code.

This means your Thermal fuse has failed.
You need to look if there are signs if the heating element has been activated.

A picture of the PCB might help.

F5AF box ended up turning my lite off. It was from a 97 aspire (which actually has 2 airbags).In my car,I had to unplug the smaller blue box (power box) (93 has 2 blue boxes) as the F5AF box has both modules built into one. I spoke with flash a bit more about this, and he advised me that just because light is off does not mean the airbag would fire in an accident. I also left the old airbag blue box screwed into car, I gave up on trying to get it out, though Flash did help with advise on how to do it, I ended up just zip tying the new box to the steering column.

Just to clarify — In all likelihood that fact that the airbag systems self diagnostics are not throwing any codes (ie Airbag Light Blinks) everything is working fine. Thus, if the airbag sensors are activated due to a sudden deceleration (an accident) the replacement airbag module will send the 12v signal to inflate the drivers airbag. Knowing there is a potential different airbag module option is good, but sadly until someone using one of these in a 90-93 Miata has an accident that causes an airbag deployment we really can not be 100% sure they are a valid replacement.
