I have never driven in an E39 M5 before so i have no idea what to expect. 530i is peppy, 540i has some brawn but not fast. Considering the M5 is heavier, etc wondering if it would be considered fast by today’s standards? I thought the 1/4 mile was unimpressive if i remember correctly.

It’s all relative & depends on what you compare it to. My M5 is quick but my 04 COBRA could mop up it’s lunch with a much better power to weight ratio.
It’s quick for the bullet proof 2-ton german tank that it is. But many cars are faster now-a-days.

Kevin, thanks i was wondering. I know allot of regular cars now have decent power. Allot of the higher end ones are light and coming with 400hp or more it seems. So hence the question would all consider the M5 fast still or fast at all?
My 530i i am embarrassed to get smoked by Saturn’s.

The M5 is not a drag car. Its a very powerful, 4-door sedan with excellent handling. If you want fast straight line times get some kind of GM or Ford.

The E60 M5 (fixed. thanks Damaskus) is faster than a Merc., Ferrari, Corvette and Lotus in the TopGear run. everything faster was a supercar.
For 507 hp to carry an elephant from 0-60 in 4.5 is pretty damn fast IMO.

Im starting to think it is not. I still drool over one, and still want one some day because I love e39’s , but many are faster.
I always thought someday I would sell the 540i and get an m5, but now I am thinking of keeping the 540i, skip the m5 and pickup a faster than m5 car.

Thats the V10 E60 M5 your referring to here. I think an M5 is much more than speed. You can screw a bazillion hp out a Yugo if you got the time and money, but its fackin Yugo. Nothing against domestic muscle cars, the 638hp ZR1 will still kick most Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Astons, etc dead square in the ballsack straight away, but in many ways its not in the same league. The M5 is refined aggression. Just a bit of anger beneath one hell of a pretty, smiling face. Get on its bad side and it has enough bite to make even Michael Vick think twice. The pedigree and prowess of the M5 is unmatched in its class to me. The E39 has no flappy paddle gearbox. No heavy, drivetrain sapping AWD quattro crap. Its just you, 3 pedals and the ultimate driving machine. I do believe sir, it dont get no better than that.
