Replaced my starter on my 2000 Land Cruiser. What a pain in the ass.

20yrs of crud i had to clean up:

pretyy much smooth sailing after the old starter was taken out and new one in. the driver side bolt on the starter was a pain to get to.

That is nuts. Not that I have replaced a ton of starters, but what a design feature.

If it is a typical Toyota, 7 spark plugs can be changed in 20 minutes. The last one will take two hours, a man, a small boy, and two priests.

Dumbest shit ever.
I think Honda V6 is the same way, and the Cadillac North Star V8 as well

on my first start up, i had a fuel leak, one of the FI gaskets failed, had to run and get a new one:

sooo i had to take out the air intake and fuel rail off again just to get to this FI.

NOTE TO SELF! If I ever own a Land Cruiser and the starter goes out, take vehicle to shop for repair.

My wife had been a long time Toyota fan for years when we got married, I was your typical Chevy/GMC Z71 guy. Those Toyota’s normally last forever, but while doing almost all of the maintenance over 200k-300k miles life of a car, I have found a few items that made me wonder who/how/why it was designed/engineered that way. If I knew in advance that a starter was under the intake manifold, I probably wouldn’t buy that vehicle.
Vloženo: 8. 19. 2019 5:32:47 EST
Toyota’s CLAIM is that the starter lasts longer since it’s not next to a hot exhaust manifold. Of course it also turns a simple repair into a grade A pain in the ass.

Must have worked at northstar before.

Thankfully my 4.6 doesn’t have a starter in that spot. They ditched that design on the new UR V8 engine family. It’s on the right side under the exhaust manifold.

The Nissan 5.7 liter is the same way. Ask me how I know?
Vloženo: 8. 19. 2019 6:00:42 EST
GM put the starter in the valley of their Northstar engines. As a former auto tech I think it is a great location for the starter! It never gets wet, or corroded with salt. Kinda like the batteries under the rear seat, a good location for the component, but people have a hard time dealing with the change from normal.

LOL, only $1000 every three years to put spark plugs in!

Egads. My wife’s RX350 V6 is way overdue for plugs, and you have to take either the plenum or the wipers and lower windshield trim off to get to the rear bank. Dreading it.

I’m sorry, but an average of 1:10 per plug is not acceptable, not even with 120k intervals.

You have your portable tent, air blower, shop-vac, tools in hard sided cases, why don’t you have a workbench or carts to put all that stuff on?

I bet if they put it underneath the vehicle you’d have to pull the engine to get to it. Be thankful they put it there.
The only thing that really goes bad in those starters is the contacts in the solenoid. But, for your sake I hope you installed a new starter and not a rebuilt. The rebuilt ones are rebuilt with the cheapest parts imaginable. If it was the contacts (and if it was clicking it was the contacts), I’d replace them with Toyota parts (need the plunger and the two contacts). If you bought a rebuilt one, plan for replacement in a few more years. depending on your miles and how often you start it.

So damn true. I won’t buy or use reman starters, alternators, or power steering pumps on my Landcruisers. I’ll buy a used core, rebuild and swap it or rebuild and reinstall the original myself.

GM starters and alternators are easy to replace but you would of had to replace them three times by now

Depends on the application I guess. Plus you can shop around and I’m sure find a dealer or shop that would be cheaper.
Toyota wanted $1250 to do the brakes on my Tundra. I did them myself for $250 and about 3 hours on a Saturday.

If true, then you’ll be ok. But, I don’t trust rebuilt parts from any big rebuilder. I trust true Denso parts in a Denso starter that I installed. Last Toyota starter I rebuilt myself I got the parts from Toyota for about $30 (new contacts and new plunger). You can usually find the Denso parts cheaper (same parts as Toyota branded) but Denso makes a lot of starters for various applications (my Kubota diesel tractor has a Denso starter) You have to get the right parts for your starter so sometimes it’s easier to just go straight to Toyota.
